Slipping Away   1 comment

We at ECOVIA usually talk about animals and environments close to our home near the mountains and desert, but this is something so important we just have to tell you about it here. The Philadelphia Zoo is working hard to protect the environment the Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus; Pongo abelii) and the plants and animals that live in the same islands of Borneo and Sumatra where these great apes are found. They have started the Philadelphia Zoo’s University Unless Prize Challenge. This is a new opportunity for university students from across the United States to join efforts to save the critically- endangered orangutan while competing to win $10,000.

The Zoo is asking students to develop the most innovative mobile device application to link consumers with palm oil manufacturers and help increase market demand for certified sustainable palm oil. All students nationwide who are enrolled in a university degree program are eligible to compete. See below for the details!

To quote from the Zoos’ information: “Palm oil is the world’s most widely-produced vegetable oil and is found in a wide array of consumer products from cookies to shampoo and in almost 50% of packaged foods. Non-sustainable palm oil cultivation is one of the leading causes of deforestation in Southeast Asia and orangutans are losing their habitat as a result. If the nature of palm oil production does not change, it is estimated that wild orangutans will become extinct in the wild in as few as 25 years.”

Here’s a chance for you to make a difference and save these endangered animals, and their rare environment!
